the race for
intelligence

we are at a crossroads. history has never seen a race quite like this. whoever reaches asi first could gain an extraordinary amount of influence over the rest of the world. i understand why many people want the united states to lead, but that ambition comes with a serious risk: a new tech oligarchy.

the rush toward asi is especially unsettling given recent warnings from people who have worked on alignment and ai safety inside the major labs. jacob coxon recently left anthropic and described the concerning behavior he witnessed at both anthropic and openai. as he put it: “i spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both openai and anthropic. neither company is acting responsibly. they are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.”

i do not think most of us have fully internalized what asi could mean for society. we have already seen internal models solve millennium problems, with more breakthroughs likely to follow soon. how will we adapt when these systems can help cure diseases, design superconductors, transform physics, and eliminate large parts of white-collar work?

cooperation between american and chinese labs may be one of the few ways to manage this future responsibly, but it could also become one of the hardest diplomatic challenges of the twenty-first century.
